UV-5R III + NA-771: Maximum Tri-Band Range Right Out of the Box

The Baofeng UV-5R III with NA-771 Antenna is the smart choice for UK amateur radio operators who want the best possible tri-band performance from day one. While the UV-5R III already delivers impressive coverage across three bands, pairing it with the NA-771 high-gain antenna pushes that performance significantly further — more signal reach on VHF, more penetration on UHF, and improved performance on the exclusive 1.25M band.

The NA-771 is one of the most trusted aftermarket antennas in the UK amateur radio community. At 38.5cm — more than double the length of the stock antenna — it delivers noticeably better gain across both VHF and UHF, giving your UV-5R III the extended reach its tri-band capability truly deserves. Installation takes seconds: unscrew the stock antenna, screw on the NA-771, and you're ready.

If you're accessing UK amateur repeaters, working simplex contacts across the countryside, or operating on a construction site or large UK venue — this bundle gives you the full UV-5R III experience without compromise.

NA-771 vs Stock Antenna — Why the Upgrade Matters for Tri-Band Use

Stock Antenna

  • Length: ~15cm (compact)
  • Basic gain — suitable for short range
  • Optimised primarily for UHF/VHF
  • Fine for close-range urban use
  • Standard performance on all 3 bands

NA-771 Upgrade Antenna

  • Length: ~38.5cm (extended)
  • Higher gain — improved range on all bands
  • SMA-Female — plug-and-play fit
  • Better VHF reach in open UK terrain
  • Stronger UHF signal in urban environments

The NA-771 uses the same SMA-Female connector as the UV-5R III — simply unscrew the stock antenna and attach the NA-771. No tools required. Instant upgrade in under 10 seconds. Compatible with all UV-5R variants.

Who Uses the Baofeng UV-5R III + NA-771 in the UK?

The UV-5R III with NA-771 antenna is popular with UK amateur radio operators and professionals who need maximum tri-band range and flexibility:

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Does the NA-771 actually improve range on the UV-5R III?

A: Yes. The NA-771 is approximately 38.5cm long — more than double the stock antenna. Its higher gain delivers noticeably improved signal strength on both VHF (2m) and UHF (70cm) bands. UK users consistently report better signal clarity and extended range compared to the stock antenna, particularly in open terrain such as hills, countryside, and large outdoor sites.

Q: Does the NA-771 work on all three bands of the UV-5R III?

A: The NA-771 is optimised for VHF (2m) and UHF (70cm) bands and will deliver improved gain on both. For the 220–260MHz (1.25M) band, the NA-771 provides basic reception and transmission — performance on the 1.25M band varies as the NA-771 is not specifically tuned for 220MHz. For dedicated 1.25M performance, a band-specific antenna would be required.

Q: What makes the UV-5R III different from the standard UV-5R?

A: The key difference is the additional 220–260MHz (1.25 metre) band. The standard UV-5R covers VHF and UHF only. The UV-5R III adds a third band, making it a genuine tri-band radio. All other core features — 128 channels, CTCSS/DCS, VOX, FM receive, CHIRP compatibility — are identical to the UV-5R platform.

Q: Is the UV-5R III legal to use in the UK?

A: Legal to own and receive on without a licence. To transmit, you require a valid UK Amateur Radio (Ham) Licence or a UK Business Radio Licence issued by Ofcom. It is not authorised for PMR446 licence-free channels. See our guide: UK Ham Radio Licences — Your Complete Guide.

Q: How do I programme the UV-5R III?

A: Use the free CHIRP software or Baofeng CPS software with an original Baofeng USB programming cable for PC programming. Manual keypad programming is also available — step-by-step instructions are included in the programming section above. Full guide: How to Program Your Baofeng Radio Using CHIRP.

Q: VHF vs UHF — which band gives better range with the NA-771 in the UK?

A: VHF (136–174MHz) with the NA-771 delivers excellent open-terrain range — ideal for UK hills, countryside, and large outdoor sites. UHF (400–520MHz) with the NA-771 provides improved building penetration — better for UK urban environments including cities like London, Manchester, and Birmingham. Read more: VHF vs UHF — Which is Better?

Q: Does the UV-5R III work on UK amateur repeaters?

A: Yes. With a valid UK Amateur Radio Licence, the UV-5R III can access UK repeaters on the VHF (2m) and UHF (70cm) bands. The NA-771 antenna will improve repeater signal access — particularly in areas where the stock antenna may not quite reach the repeater. Programme the repeater input/output frequencies, CTCSS access tone, and offset using CHIRP or the manual keypad method above.

UK LEGAL NOTICE: LICENCE REQUIRED TO TRANSMIT

IMPORTANT: The Baofeng UV-5R III is not a PMR446 licence-free radio. To transmit on its frequencies within the UK, you must hold a valid UK Amateur Radio (Ham) Licence or a UK Business Radio Licence issued by Ofcom. Transmitting without a licence is illegal and may result in prosecution. Receiving (listening only) is permitted without a licence. Please ensure you comply with all current UK radio licensing regulations before transmitting.

Neat little starter radio for amateurs

Posted by Peter Ashton on 11th Apr 2026

This is a great starter radio for anyone who has ust qualifier as a Radio Amateur, and for a lot of people who have been quaified for a long time! Really simple to set up, both for simplex and duplex frequencies, and there are a wide range of aftermarket and third party antennas available to help increase the range. It's a classic and really cheap!

    Great Radio

Posted by Nico on 28th Mar 2023

Really good radio, at first I was mainly worried about the website as I never bought anything from it before. I can say that everything went okay though. Delivery took about 10 days but it all arrived in order. I was worried about the payment method too as It said PayPal was accepted but this was not an option at checkout. It did accept Google Pay though, so this is how I paid. The radio itself is great, just what you see from reviews online about the UV-5R. RECOMMENDED as I could not find this on ebay or Amazon.
