BAOFENG UV-5R DUAL BAND UHF/VHF HAM RADIO
I'm a kayaker and although I'm not registered to use it you can use it in a life threatening situation. It's handy for when SHTF situations because it has ham radio and FM radio functions which is handy in such emergencies. It is charged by 5 volt USB so can be charged by those camping solar panels etc. I also got the long aerial to improve reception and reach. I also have the hand mic which also acts as a speaker. You do have to enter and save the channels which is a bit disappointing but easy enough.
