The Baofeng BF-888S PMR446 operates on the PMR446 (446–446.2MHz) frequency band — the UK and EU designated licence-free radio standard. Squelch Level

The Squelch mutes the speaker when no signal is present. With squelch correctly set, you only hear audio when a transmission is received — eliminating background hiss and noise between calls.

Time-Out Timer (TOT)

The TOT limits the length of a single transmission. This prevents the radio from transmitting for an extended period, which could cause thermal damage. An alert sounds when the transmission limit is reached.

VOX (Voice Operated Transmit)

VOX eliminates the need to press the PTT button. The transmitter activates automatically when the VOX circuit detects you speaking into the microphone — ideal for hands-free operation.

Battery Saver

Reduces battery consumption when not receiving a signal. Battery saver activates automatically 10 seconds after no signal is received and no operation is being performed.

Battery Low Alert

When the battery needs recharging, an alert tone sounds and the red LED flashes to warn the user before the radio loses power.

Monitor

Press and hold the MONI button when no signal is present to open the squelch. This is useful for adjusting the volume level or checking for weak signals on a channel.

Busy Channel Lock-Out (BCL)

BCL prevents you from transmitting on a channel that is already in use. If you press PTT while a signal is present, an alert tone sounds and the transmitter is inhibited.

CTCSS / DCS Privacy Codes

CTCSS (Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System) and DCS (Digital Coded Squelch) are sub-audible tones that allow you to filter out transmissions from other users on the same channel — so your radio only opens when it receives a signal from a radio using the same matching tone.

Important: CTCSS/DCS tones do NOT scramble or encrypt your conversation. They only filter out unwanted incoming calls. Other users on the same channel can still hear your transmissions.
