✓ NO RADIO LICENCE REQUIRED — PMR446 COMPLIANT

The Baofeng BF-888S PMR446 operates on the PMR446 (446–446.2MHz) frequency band — the UK and EU designated licence-free radio standard. With 0.5W output power and a fixed antenna, it meets all technical requirements for legal licence-free use. No Ofcom registration, no frequency fees, no legal issues.

Squelch Level

The Squelch mutes the speaker when no signal is present. With squelch correctly set, you only hear audio when a transmission is received — eliminating background hiss and noise between calls.

Time-Out Timer (TOT)

The TOT limits the length of a single transmission. This prevents the radio from transmitting for an extended period, which could cause thermal damage. An alert sounds when the transmission limit is reached.

VOX (Voice Operated Transmit)

VOX eliminates the need to press the PTT button. The transmitter activates automatically when the VOX circuit detects you speaking into the microphone — ideal for hands-free operation.

Battery Saver

Reduces battery consumption when not receiving a signal. Battery saver activates automatically 10 seconds after no signal is received and no operation is being performed.

Battery Low Alert

When the battery needs recharging, an alert tone sounds and the red LED flashes to warn the user before the radio loses power.

Monitor

Press and hold the MONI button when no signal is present to open the squelch. This is useful for adjusting the volume level or checking for weak signals on a channel.

Busy Channel Lock-Out (BCL)

BCL prevents you from transmitting on a channel that is already in use. If you press PTT while a signal is present, an alert tone sounds and the transmitter is inhibited.

CTCSS / DCS Privacy Codes

CTCSS (Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System) and DCS (Digital Coded Squelch) are sub-audible tones that allow you to filter out transmissions from other users on the same channel — so your radio only opens when it receives a signal from a radio using the same matching tone.

Important: CTCSS/DCS tones do NOT scramble or encrypt your conversation. They only filter out unwanted incoming calls. Other users on the same channel can still hear your transmissions.

Antenna Type: Compatible with SMA-Female antenna

Earpiece & Programming: Compatible with K-plug earpiece and programming cable

1. Do I need a licence to use the Baofeng BF-888S PMR446 in the UK?

The BF-888S PMR446 / BF-88E version sold on this page is designed for licence-free PMR446 use. It operates on the 446.0–446.2 MHz PMR446 band at 0.5W and is supplied with a fixed antenna.

That makes it different from higher-power programmable Baofeng amateur or business radios, which may require an appropriate Ofcom licence before transmitting.

If licence-free operation is essential, make sure you are buying the specific PMR446 / BF-88E version rather than the standard higher-power BF-888S UHF model.

You can compare other suitable options in our licence-free PMR446 radio range.

2. How far can this walkie talkie 2 pack communicate?

The product's stated range is approximately 2–4 km in open areas under suitable conditions.

Actual range depends on your location, terrain, buildings, interference and line of sight between the two radios. Open countryside generally provides better range than dense urban areas, woodland or large buildings.

Advertised walkie talkie range should therefore be viewed as an optimal-condition figure rather than a guaranteed communication distance.

3. Can the BF-888S PMR446 communicate with other walkie talkies?

Yes. It can communicate with other compatible analogue PMR446 radios when they are using the same PMR446 channel and compatible settings.

The radios do not necessarily have to be the same brand. Compatible PMR446 radios from brands such as Motorola or other manufacturers may communicate with the BF-888S PMR446 when both radios use the same channel and compatible settings.

If CTCSS or DCS tones are enabled, the tone settings may also need to match.

4. Are these walkie talkies rechargeable and do they support USB charging?

Yes. This 2 pack includes two rechargeable 1500mAh Li-ion battery packs and two desktop chargers with USB connectors.

The USB connection makes it possible to power the charging docks from a suitable USB power source.

The product's stated battery life is approximately eight hours, although actual performance varies depending on how frequently the radios are transmitting, receiving and remaining on standby.

5. What comes with the Baofeng BF-888S PMR446 2 pack?

The set includes two BF-888S PMR446 / BF-88E radios, two rechargeable 1500mAh batteries, two USB-connected desktop chargers, two PTT earpieces, two belt clips, two hand straps and two English user manuals.

Buying the radios as a 2 pack provides two compatible units and matching essential accessories together, which can be more convenient and cost-effective than purchasing each unit separately.

For additional radio accessories, visit our Baofeng earpiece and accessory range.

6. What is the BF-888S PMR446 2 pack suitable for?

The BF-888S PMR446 2 pack is suitable for short-range group communication between two users in environments such as retail stores, hospitality venues, events, schools, small warehouses, security operations, construction sites, camping trips and other outdoor activities.

Its simple channel selection, Push-to-Talk operation, VOX function, rechargeable batteries and included earpieces make it particularly suitable when users want straightforward communication without relying on mobile networks or monthly fees.

For larger sites, difficult terrain or applications requiring greater coverage, assess the location and radio requirements before choosing a system because PMR446 range depends heavily on the environment.
