❓ What is the difference between UV-5R and UV-5RH?
The UV-5RH is the upgraded "Pro" version. It features 10W power (vs 5W), a larger 2500mAh battery (vs 1800mAh), a bigger 1.77" screen, and receive capability for AM Airband.
❓ What is the real-world range?
With 10W of power, the UV-5RH offers extended range. In open environments (hilltops, sea), you can expect 10km+. In dense urban areas, the 10W power penetrates buildings better than standard radios, typically offering 2-5km range.
❓ Do I need a licence?
Yes and No. You do not need a licence to listen (receive). However, to transmit on Amateur bands, you need a valid UK Amateur Radio Licence. Using this on PMR446 frequencies is not permitted.
❓ Are my old UV-5R accessories compatible?
Most audio accessories (Earpieces, Speaker Mics) using the K1 (2-Pin) connector WILL work. However, due to the larger battery size, old UV-5R batteries and cases are NOT compatible.
❓ How do I program this radio?
Wireless Bluetooth Programming: To program wirelessly via your phone, you can buy the Baofeng BT-A1D Wireless Bluetooth Adapter separately. This connects to the UV-5RH and works with the official OLA App.

Perfect For Azan (Call to Prayer)
I use this for listening to the call to prayer (Azan) from my local mosque and talks of peaceful religious nature. After a little research I opted to pick up the Multiband Version. The £40.99 package came with a tonne of extra stuff including belt clip, more powerful antenna, usb cable, charging dock etc. Arrived within 10 days and so far it's a great addition to the home. I'm completely new to this, so I watched a YouTube guide to understand basics, after which it was easy to setup. I keep volume just about loud enough to reach the different rooms in my apartment, but quiet enough that it doesn't impact neighbours. Extremely happy with purchase and already recommended to others.

What a surprise, I purchased to listen to aircraft/atc in the UK, I normally use more expensive Uniden scanners but this little radio is amazing. Perfect piece of kit

Well made, a very good radio. I have listened to 4 detections on the airband, 1 conversation on Ham band, 1 morse message. The FM broadcast radio is super clear sound, better than any radio at my location.

Was interested to try
I bought this because I was interested and it’s such a small amount that I would not lose a lot if it wasn’t for me. It’s great! I’m using it to listen to local nets and air traffic from our local airport. You need to spend time understanding it of course but that’s part of the fun. The manual is actually okay. I’m now studying for a UK foundation license which is also helping me understand it better. Quick tip….if you use Chirp, select 5RM as the model, not UV-5R….otherwise it won’t find your device.
